Low-Power Atom Processor from INTEL

By Susan — [ ] Reported at 7:27 pm, 04/02/2008.

Intel is in the process of launching its Atom product line that have been built around an ultra low power x86 processor. One of the more interesting details of Silverthorne is its modular nature. Silverthorne uses SMT to minimize latencies that can occur during pipeline stalls.

Silverthorne is an x86 compatible processor which Intel claims lowers the average TDP by 10 times compared to the ultra low voltage CPUs used in the last generation UMPCs. Silverthorne uses SMT to minimize latencies that can occur during pipeline stalls. If one thread has stalled, the CPU switches immediately to another thread.
