The unique Virtual Museum website by St George's Historical society is dedicated to the history of mental health in Northumberland charts the progress made by the industry which before 1859 had no provisions for those with mental health issues.

St George's Society was initiated by NHS staff wishing to preserve historical documents as well as all historic photographs in order to safeguard the 150-year-old history of the hospital.

Before the hospital was built the only facility for people with mental health problems was the workhouse.
