Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) - New Standards with .NU Domain Names

By Susan — [ ] Reported at 4:25 am, 01/28/2005.

NU Domain is among the first Country-Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs) to offer its registrars the new standard Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP). The implementation of this standard provides registrars the ability to use a single interface for all TLD registries and streamlines integration processes, thus reducing registrars' costs. The Internet organization ICANN, which oversees the Internet's domain name system, now requires all generic top domains, such as .com, .net, .org, to adapt to EPP.

VeriSign on unauthorized domain hijack

By Susan — [ ] Reported at 9:53 am, 01/24/2005.

A VeriSign spokesman has said that Verisign found out that a domain name panix.com was transferred without the prior knowledge of the actual registrant and the name servers also changed on Sunday, January 9.

The domain name of Panix, a well-known public access network in New York which later became a commercial ISP, was transferred to Melbourne IT via a reseller in the UK, and panix.com's mail was redirected to another company in Canada over the weekend of January 15-16.

VeriSign serves as a registry for .com and .net domain names. Verisign says that panix.com domain hijack was a true "unauthorized transfer" which took place because of an inadvertent issue with a Registrar transfer system.

Panix has blamed Melbourne IT for the incident.

Microsoft on Spywares and Anti-Virus

By Susan — [ ] Reported at 10:26 am, 01/08/2005.

Microsoft has recently declared the final launch of two newly designed tools to deal with spyware and viruses, that were acquired as a result of takeovers, and confirmed that a full-blown antivirus offering will be released later this year.

The tool is planned to be used to clean the infected machines and not preventing them from becoming infected. The antivirus software is being made available for downloading from January 11 and will be updated with fresh virus definitions on the second Tuesday of the month.

The beta version of the Windows AntiSpyware has been made available for downloading from the company's site. It has been developed using software developed by spyware company Giant, which Microsoft took over during December last.

This move points that Microsoft may soon reach to a new scenario popularizing its antivirus software through the same medium it has been using to deliver the fixes for its own bugs that has been allowing quite many viruses to circulate in the first place.
